The Black Oystercatcher White Pearl is from the cool climate Southern tip of South Africa and in a typical style of white Bordeaux wines with 59% Semillon and 41% Sauvignon Blanc. It is 41% tank fermented and 59% French barrel fermented and aged. This is a full-bodied white wine with lots of interesting characteristics.
In the glass, it has a gold-green colour with a slightly oily appearance. It is very forthcoming in the glass with strong aromatic flavours of freshly cut grass, hay, lemon, lime, dried fruit and green bell pepper. It delivers well on the palate with complex notes of lemon, lime, dried grass, bell peppers and s hint of honey. It is very fresh, but with a pleasing complexity.
For many South Africans, this is an unusual wine. However, it is a wine that can elevate food and wine experiences significantly. Clams, roasted chicken, pork belly and kabeljou will go extremely well with this wine, among many others. But it has a good enough balance of finesse and complexity to be enjoyed on its own. When I presented this wine at a recent tasting, someone described this wine in a very interesting way: drinking this wine is like looking at a painting you don’t quite understand, but you keep on looking. It is for sure a wine that grabs your attention and will start any conversation.
