Bruce Jack Boer maak ‘n plan Chenin Blanc 2018

Writer: Jaco MeyerJaco Meyer

I have presented the Bruce Jack Boer maak ‘n Plan Chenin Blanc at a blind tasting and I was not surprised to see that it was the majority’s favourite! This barrel fermented Chenin Blanc from 24 year-old vines is an excellent wine with much complexity and fruitiness. The name “Boer maak ‘n plan” refers to the challenges that wine farmers have to face in terms of weather. It fits well with the naming of some of his other wines.

This wine has a deep yellow to gold colour with a tinge of green on the edges. It is very forthcoming on the nose and promises yellow apples, green melon, lime, sweet spices and honey on the nose. It follows through excellently with the yellow and white fruits, some sweet oak spice, and honeycomb. It enters with some fresh acidity, developing slowly into a well-balanced wine that activates the entire palate, and then lingers for long with notes of spices and honeycomb. This wine has a really smooth mouthfeel that might come from extended lees contact.

Chenin Blanc is quite popular at the moment in South Africa and this is one not to be missed. The price is not too steep for the quality and can be enjoyed, chilled well, at all occasions. It will pair well with seafood, pasta with white sauce or pork dishes. It will probably age well for up to 5 years.

This wine is available from Partners in Wine.
