Delheim Pinotage 2018

Writer's picture: Jaco MeyerJaco Meyer

The grapes for the Delheim Pinotage were sourced from bush vines and trellised vineyards in the Muldersvlei area. 2018 is marked by droughts and unseasonal rains, resulting in smaller berries and lower yields. The end result is a concentrated wine with fruit-forward characteristics.

In the glass, it has a clear cardinal red colour. On the nose, it is fruit-forward with prominent red fruits such as ripe cherries, preserved figs and some blackberry jam. It has a soft entry but with firm tannins, centring on the middle palate with more complexity of cranberry, plums, smoked spices and dry forest floor. It has a smooth finish of oak spices (probably due to the 11 months that it spent in French oak barrels) and cloves.

This medium-bodied Pinotage is great value for money and an easy-drinking wine for many occasions. It can be enjoyed now or left for another two years or so. It will pair well with game biltong or a hearty beef stew.
