The Eagle’s Nest Merlot 2017 is a superb wine and probably very underrated due to its screwcap and affordable price. However, it is a wine that fits perfectly into the current trend of more serious and bolder Merlots. I recently presented this wine at a Decanter Wine Club and it was an absolute favourite!
In the glass, this wine has a deep garnet colour. It is very forthcoming on the nose with red fruit, black fruit, spice and vanilla. It is complex on the nose and full-bodied on the palate, creating a perfect balance on the palate between fruit, alcohol and acidity. It has hints of deep plum, redcurrants, blackcurrant, sour cherry and rosemary, with a long fresh fruity and herbal finish. It remains fresh throughout.
This is a very pleasant wine that can be enjoyed on its own or with food. It will work well with a beef stew, melanzane or roasted chicken. It is not necessary to decant this wine and it is good to enjoy now or within the next three years for optimal enjoyment. It is true value for money.
