Hartenberg The Eleanor 2020

Writer's picture: Jaco MeyerJaco Meyer

The top-end Chardonnay of Hartenberg is named after the matriarch of Hartenberg, Eleanor. Together with The Stork (Shiraz), this is one of the Hartenberg single varietal wines that you do not want to miss!

This wine has a light golden-yellow colour and a beautiful nose of citrus and flowers. It is forthcoming in the glass and has a very elegant entry. It is fresh, with a good acidity and soft mouthfeel. The citrus, flowers and lanolin play around on the palate and hints of pastry and nuts are evident from the 10 months on oak. Although this wine drinks well now, it calls for a bit more development in the bottle. Maybe a further five years or so? As it is now, it is lacking a bit of the complexity that is promised by the nose.

This wine will go extremely well with a cheese-rich pasta, as it has a good acidity to cut through the creaminess of the pasta and the lime elements will work well with some simple spices. It should be served chill and shows the wine very well in a Riedel Chardonnay glass. This wine can be aged for 5-7 years to achieve optimum potential.
