The Meerlust Rubicon is an iconic wine in various ways. Not only is it a historical wine in the history of South African Bordeaux-style reds but it has also become a symbol of status. So much so that people who invited us over offered me very scarce and expensive international wines, but urged me not to select their precious Rubicon.
I recently presented the 2017 vintage of the Rubicon at a club tasting and I was pleased to taste how well the wine aged over five years. It has the potential to develop well over the next five to ten years but is really good to drink now. It has a deep garnet colour with a deep ruby rim. On the nose there are notes of violets, spices, plums, red and black fruits and cedar wood. Upon entry, you are struck by the liquorice notes, followed by a concentration on the middle palate of plums, black cherry and cassis. It has a good structure with rounded tannins that were softened in wood and through malolactic conversion.
This wine is ideal for drinking on its own or with food. It will go well with red meat, potjiekos and French style baked chicken. Although it is a complex wine, it is blended and matured in such a way that it pleases all palates and that it becomes a rather easy-drinking wine. There are many competitive Bordeaux-style wines in this price range, but the Meerlust Rubicon remains popular among consumers. It is a wine that is certainly worth a try!
