If you know the Mullineux wines range, you will not be surprised to know that they make their straw wine from Chenin Blanc. Chenin Blanc is not only the signature grape variety of the Swartland area but also one of the varieties that were perfected by Andrea and Chris Mullineux.
Straw wine, also known as Vin de Paille from Jura in France where this style originated, is one of the methods that are used to produce highly concentrated sweet wines. Grapes are picked at normal ripeness (they are thus not left to dry on the vines or develop botrytis) and then dried on straw beds (for about 4 weeks) before they are pressed and fermented. The fermentation process took about 11 months. Due to the labour intensity, time and risk factors, this is not a very popular method of producing sweet wines and therefore only a handful of producers in South Africa have straw wine on offer.
This wine has a clear gold colour with a deep centre. It is extremely forthcoming on the nose and provides a complex smell of citrus, yellow raspberry, dried apricots, peaches, marzipan and butterscotch. It is a well-structured wine on the palate that balances perfectly all over with full fruitiness in the centre, sweetness in the front and a great acidity on the sides of the palate. The flavour is concentrated and delivers well from the nose, with some further complexity of mango and granitic minerality. Due to the perfect balance of this wine, it appears much sweeter than what it really is. It can literally be enjoyed drop by drop and is the ideal wine to end any tasting or dinner.
This wine should be served ice cold and will compliment most desserts. Only 7,276 bottles were produced.
