The Nederburg Baronne blend is made in the style of many Australian red blends, consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. This blend was created by cellarmaster Günter Brözel, who made this wine for the first time in 1973 and thus around for over 50 years. I tasted this wine in several blind tastings among a variety of other South African wines and it is certainly not inferior to its competitors. This wine is a rather underrated wine and true value for money.
The grapes were selected from well-performing vineyards across the Western Cape and the individual components were aged for approximately six months before they were blended. In the glass, this wine has a ruby colour with a deep purple rim. It is fruity on the nose, with a medium complex nose of black fruit, vanilla, oak spice and a hint of dark chocolate. It delivers well on the palate with plums, black berries, red berries, black cherries, prunes, vanilla and oak spice. It has a well-balanced structure with just enough tannins to keep the wine together beautifully. It has a long, dry but fruity finish.
This wine can be enjoyed on its own or with beef burgers, a braai or potjiekos. Nederburg describes this wine as trustworthy, dependable and reliable – words not normally used to describe wines. However, it captures this wine very well, as it is always a safe option to go with. This wine has the potential to age up to 15+ years. It is real value for money.
