Neethlingshof Estate Gewürztraminer 2023

The Neethlingshof Estate Gewürztraminer is one of a handful of local single varietal Gewürztraminers that are available on the wine shelves in South Africa. This one, however, is much dryer (with 6.7g/l residual sugar) in comparison with most other Gewürztraminers, made in the sweeter German style and residual sugars leaning towards 30g/l. Nevertheless, De Wet Viljoen managed to capture the core of the variety well by ensuring that it expresses is characteristics clearly and neatly.

In the glass, this wine has a pale-yellow colour. It is forthcoming on the nose with lots of tropical fruit, citrus, floral notes and rose petals. It delivers very well on the palate with a sweet and crisp entry of rambutan, kiwi fruit, candied orange peel, yellow apples, fresh apricots, rose petals, Turkish delight and a hint of honey. A crisp minerality and fresh citrus acidity keeps the bouquet together throughout. It has a medium-length, fresh finish.

This wine should be served well chilled and it is ready to drink now or within the next 4-5 years. It should preferably be served in a smaller glass type. It can be enjoyed on its own, or with some spicy Cape Malay curry, bobotie or with a light dessert. It is good value for money and is worthwhile to throw into a sweeter style line-up of wines.
