The Newton Johnson wines are famous when it comes to Pinot Noir but it is important not to forget about some of their other, good quality wines that come at a good price. The Southend Chardonnay is one of them.
In your glass, you have a clear wine with light yellow and green tinges. It has a fresh smell of citrus, sweet spices and tropical fruits. It has a crisp entry with lovely flavours of lime, lemon and subtle hints of vanilla and pineapple. Unlike what most people might expect, this is not a heavy wooded and buttery chardonnay. In fact, it is fresh with a crisp acidity that makes this the perfect wine for a creamy pasta. I recently paired this wine with a very rich cheese wheel pasta and the acidity of the wine could cut right through the creaminess and the fruitiness of the wine complimented the flavours of the sauce. I had many people smiling with this pairing.
I read somewhere that this wine was described as their bottom of the range Chardonnay. But believe me if I say that this wine is certainly not inferior and is well worth a try. I really enjoyed it.
