The Osbloed Rooi Perd is part of the selection of wines, made by controversial winemaker Bertus van Niekerk. He was one of the first winemakers to acknowledge the potential of Cinsualt as a single varietal and is still taking much proud in his single variety Cinsault. Although indicated as a non-vintage, the wine tasted was bottled in 2023.
This wine has a light red colour with a purple hint in the glass. It is forthcoming on the nose, with red fruit, perfume and earthiness playing around as part of the bouquet of this wine. It is a light-bodied wine with hints of redcurrant, raspberries, ripe strawberries and red plums. Notes of white and green pepper is evident against a good structure of this wine. It has a medium and dry finish.
This wine can mostly be obtained from the winemaker directly and is certainly not your average on-the-shelf type of wine. It is a must try for the adventurous taster. It can be chilled slightly and enjoyed on its own, or paired with cooked prawns, smoky barbeque ribs or snails. Thank you, Bertus, for always sharing your wine and stories with us!
