Spier 21 Gables Pinotage 2016

Writer: Jaco MeyerJaco Meyer

You are expecting guests that you really want to impress but they are not very adventurous? Then why not give them a Spier Pinotage so that they can feel comfortable with a familiar brand but be blown away by superior quality?

The wines from Spier that bears the 21 Gables on their label were created to honour the farm's architectural legacy: the 21 gables on the farm which is the most on any wine farm in South Africa. The colour of this wine is a deep ruby with a lighter red rim and a dark heart. Upon entrance, the velvet tannins create a smooth entry with much fruitiness of plums, black cherries, blackcurrant, dark chocolate and peppery spices. It is a full-bodied, complex wine that lingers for a long time and leaves some hints of blackcurrant and cherries behind.

This is a really good wine that will work well for all occasions. It can be paired well with beef or veal. I really enjoyed this wine that was aged in French, American and Hungarian oak barrels for 20 months – that is why the 2017 vintage is currently available from Spier directly. This is definitely one of the top Pinotages from South Africa and a must try for anyone who appreciates a good wine.
