Spier recently launched an organic range called Good Natured with two white wines (Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc) and two red wines (Shiraz and Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon) that are made from vineyards that are approximately five years old. People often get put off by the use of the word “organic”, not knowing that it mostly refers to the winegrowing and winemaking processes and very little with the taste of the wine. For Spier, organic means that no artificial pesticides, fungicides and fertilisers were used in the vineyards, making this a healthier choice for the consumer and the environment. Therefore, the word “organic” should rather be encouraging to consumers to buy such wines.
The Sauvignon Blanc grapes for this wine were grown in the Lutzville area which is rich in lime soils and a good terroir for this grape variety. The grapes were harvested at night to prevent oxidation and keep the fruit fresh for optimal natural acidity, because no additional acidity is added later.
In the glass, this wine has a pale-yellow colour with a light green hue. It is forthcoming on the nose, with notes of lemon, lime, grapefruit and freshly cut grass. It has a soft entry, but delivering on the expected acidity, showcasing the lemon, grapefruit, gooseberries and grass, with a quick hint of litchi, butter biscuits and white flowers. It has a soft finish that is fresh.
This wine finds itself in the middle of Sauvignon Blanc styles, meaning that it will be appreciated by many people with different preferences for Sauvignon Blanc. It is a soft wine with medium complexity and is ideal to be enjoyed on its own. This wine is vegan friendly.
