Springfield is a favourite go-to wine producer for many South Africans and it is with great excitement that they have launched a sparkling wine recently. I was fortunate to be able to taste this wine, shortly before it was released, and I knew it was going to be a hit. Shortly after release, most of the wine was sold out, and for a good reason: it is a great MCC. And the winemaker, Emma, comes from a background of sparkling wine making. The name Garuzis was the previous name of Etosha in Namibia, the birthplace of the Springfield matriarch. This creates an interesting connection with Springfield’s history and their latest release.
In the glass, this wine has a salmon to bright orange colour. It is forthcoming on the nose with hints of apples, peaches and nuts. It is creamy and slightly foamy on the palate, giving a soft mouthfeel with elegant bubbles. The palate is bursting with Granny Smith apples, lime, dried peaches, apricots, hints of berries, honey and almonds. It has a medium finish that is mostly fresh with a slight stone minerality.
This wine is best served cold and in flute glasses. It can be enjoyed on its own or with a salmon starter. I am glad that this is now part of the Springfield offering, it is well worth a try!
