The Fishwives Club wines tell a story of perseverance – a young entrepreneurial man with small beginnings, ending up with an international market of his wines that are sourced from selected sites in the Western Cape. I have recently presented the Chardonnay and it was one of the favourites for the day!
This wine has a light-yellow colour, with clear notes of grapefruit, butterscotch and pineapple on the nose. It has a very fresh and aromatic entry, with tropical notes, green melon, lemon, butterscotch and a stone minerality. It ends fresh and aromatic. This wine is a little explosion on the palate with freshness and fruitiness, presenting just enough (French and American Maple) wood to bring out the best of the grapes. Although the grapes were mostly sourced from the Cape Town area, one could very easily confuse this wine with some of the really good sites in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
This wine is real good value for money and limited quantities are available in South Africa, as the most of these wines are exported. Theunis van Zijl, who is the winemaker at Imbuko, was in charge of creating this pretty wine. It can be enjoyed as a welcome drink, served chilled, or it will cut right through any creamy pasta with its directed acidity. It is a great wine.
