Tokara Director’s White Blend 2021

Tokara has two Directors blends: one red and one white. I felt that the white blend needed more exposure and decided to include it in one of the Decanter Wine Club events with a focus on Sauvignon Blanc. Not only was it a perfect fit for its international counterparts, but it was an amazing wine. At this rather early point, many people might think “yes, Tokara makes great wine overall”. If that is you, don’t just put all Tokara wines in the thumbs-up box: the Director’s White Blend needs much iteration of its outstanding quality and craftmanship.

It is a Bordeaux-style white blend with 68% Sauvignon Blanc and 32% Sémillon. Coming from a farm that focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, the Simonsberg expression in the Sauvignon Blanc is superb and contributing to a wine that is quite different from most other Bordeaux-style whites from South Africa.

In the glass, this wine has a pale straw colour with a complex and forthcoming nose. Citrus, tropical fruit and hints of nuts and berries are evident on the nose. The entry of this wine is fresh, elegant, complex and fruity. It starts with a prominent note of pink grapefruit, followed by floral notes, red berries, blueberries and passionfruit. The tropical notes are kept together with a zesty lime acidity, but with a toasted bread undertone and elegant mouthfeel. It has a long persistent finish of grapefruit and lemon. This wine remains fresh throughout and will leave you lingering for more.

The complex notes of this wine make it an ideal wine to enjoy on its own, or with food such as roasted chicken, pork belly, roasted vegetables and fish. It should be served chilled well and should be enjoyed without too much swirling that might let some more prominent notes overpower other more delicate notes. This is a must-try wine and for me one of the best Bordeaux-style whites that I had recently.
