When you talk about Voga wine, there is only one word that can summarise these wines: fashion. Apart from its strong link with fashion, the long clear glass bottle with the plastic cap (hiding a cork underneath) and the simple logo is a fashion statement in its own right. Although they pride them in the Pinot Gris, the Merlot (grapes sourced from Sicily) should definitely not be underestimated.
The Voga Merlot has a light red colour that is consistent throughout with a rather light heart in the glass. On the nose, it presents notes of black berries, red berries and a hint of spice. On the palate, this wine is very fresh, it has a fair complexity and extremely elegant tannins. It is a medium-bodied wine that balances well on the palate with blackberries, ripe black cherries, black raspberry, sweet oak spice and a subtle hint of mocha with cloves. The finish is really soft and of a good length.
When I presented this wine at the Decanter Wine Club, I could not get it over my heart to present the wine blind – simply because I felt that I will not do the beautiful design of the bottle justice. Well, suddenly I had many people taking photos, ooh’s and aah’s, and comments like “I don’t really like Merlot, but this is something different”. Indeed, it is a great, easy drinking Merlot, typically in the style of Italian Merlots. It is not a wine that should be sitting on a shelf, waiting for the right moment – it should be taken out at the first best opportunity to enjoy a good Merlot or to pair a Merlot with a roast beef and vegetables. Both the bottle and the wine will make a good impression on your guests. I recommend that it is served slightly cooled.
